Total Quality Management or TQM in short have become so popular eversince the American Corporate Sector started to ask themselves “If Japan Can,Why NOT USA?”

So,TQM as a Business Philosophy can WORK well if only Top Mgmt are committed,involved and support it all the time.Any lukewarm response or half hearted way of doing TQM will doomed to failure an never can reap the harvest of good quality!

So when TQM take many shortcuts surely results will also shortfalls and never give the real impacts and defect free results like nowadays millions of cars in the market being recalled is deemed common not like before a major catastrophy or worst kind of problem to the company.So when you recalled your products from the market place surely millions of USD or Yen will be incurred as external failure costs and effect your company’s bottom line or profits.The recent jetliners grounding due to suspected battery failures also a major market problems that can effect millions of USD to the companies concerned.

All the news we hear and read in magazines,newspapers,TV shows and documentaries are interestingly about Great CEOs or Leaders are more about what they earned a month,a year and in their career!Why?

We “poor people” are awed as to their high paying salaries in the Millions of USD,Ringgit or SGD every month they worked.Prof Drucker the Great Manageement Guru once cautioned us to only pay about 20 times more salary between the lowest officer than the CEO (No.1) and anything more than that will be bad or create great tensions in the company due to the exorbitant salary differences.

For example Ramli read the news about our own Malaysian Bank CEO who is paid annually a salary of almost RM 5 Million a year while the maybe lowest executive in the bank may earned (eg.RM 2,500 x 16 months with 4 mths bonus) RM 40,000 annually.So  based on this example the CEO earned almost 125 times more than the normal executive in the bank?Its so much more than the 20 times salary difference as proposed by Prof.Drucker?

In USA the salary of CEOs are mind boggling where  the CEO of Apple Inc received about USD378 Million (RM 1.16 Billion) in his 2011 salary and perks.Is it fair or a good practice for a rich company like Apple Inc to do?Then what must be a fair compensation?

Real Great CEOs must do more for their people and that includes making their people better,richer and happier after he gets his people to work harder,smarter,more loyal and great passion for the company’s prosperity and customer satisfaction.

Fire in the CEO’s eyes must be more to all this responsibilities and roles of CEO and his ability to make things work and produce great results are his mission all the time!

CEOs who only wants big fat salary must be ignored and not worthy as Company Champion or Head Honcho!YOU only relax and enjoy your rewards after your hard work and smart thinking to raise the standard of your people,company and stakeholders satisfaction.Maybe thats a better way to make living better and improve the people happiness and lives.What say you?

Being No.1 person in a company like a CEO’s post is good at times and bad (no challenging is a better word) at times also!Why?

A CEO is a person who leads and who set the pace,the culture and actions of the company!If the business is good,products selling well and customers are delighted then its all about managing success and more growth…

However if the company business is slow,poor sales and lots of customer complaints then the CEO’s job need lots of hard work,smart thinking and making all the right moves for Business Transformation,Survival and Sustainability!

Maybe companies like Maybank,CIMB,Sime Darby,AirAsia have aspirations to be Juara ASEAN or ASIA and to move up to be Juara Dunia or World Ranking companies in terms of market capitalisation,sales turnover and EBITDA performance then they are still very far as compared to Japanese or Chinese and even Singaporean companies.

So what are then Malaysian CEOs performance so far and are they doing their very best to really perform and achieve their mission rather than Cakap Cakap or Lagak Lagak like they are World CEOs’ Quality and Performers and worst still when they fooled the people or stakeholders with their Business Plans and over promise (just mere cheap talk not real results)Maybe thats the challenge for Malaysian CEOs?

 

Working in the Govt or Private company will qualify you to earn a monthly salary that is consistent and in many ways good for you and your family.If you are an Entrepreneur and if business is good then you too can qualify for your monthly earnings if you have requested the company to pay you monthly.Many Public Listed Companies Top Mgmt or even original owners of that PLCs all want a salary paid to them monthly and at times when the company made a great loss at the end of the financial year these PLCs Directors also get paid handsomely by their company and many Malaysian PLCs Directors earned at least above RM500,000 every year .The highest paid Malaysian Ditector can earn more than RM100 million a year by way of salaries,allowances and all the perks.

Malaysian Directors or CEos especially now demand easily a monthly salary of above RM50,000 a month to some a maximum of RM 800,000 a month?WOW!Maybe they raked in Billions of RM for their companies concerned!So,a million ringgit a month remuneration is oklah as decided or agreed upon by the Company Owner or BOD.

There were times when a worker in Malaysia is paid based on per day basis and also per working hour basis.Later they get paid on a weekly basis,forthnightly and monthly basis as most working people get their salaries in this way!

Entertainers like Dato Siti Nurhalizah or others may command a performance fee of RM 45,000 for a night show (wonder whats her rate now because in 2001 Ramli did asked for a quotation of Datuk Siti’s fee to her Manager)That RM45,000 fee was only for her solo performance exclude transport,food and lodging if needed and also with the presence of 4 of her crew members!

Earning a living can now best be managed on an hourly rate,daily rate,project basis or whatever have been agreed upon by the parties involved.

Like in Pro Boxing,the World Champion Manny Pacquiao from Philippines once earned USD 40 million for a scheduled 12 rounds of boxing ie.12 rounds x 3 mins per round = 36 mins of solid boxing time.So per min Pacquiao earned USD1,111,111.00 if he boxed for the full 12 rounds!

Same goes to World Class Footballers like Messi,Ronaldo and others who earned a salary of USD 15Milli8on to USD 40 million a month!

Earning a living is so important to all of us and saving part of our earnings is more equally important to meet our future needs and retirement period!Nowadays the savings attitude is slow or not so much focus and promote by Malaysian Govt and Companies alike.Young generation like Gen Y are more a tuned to spending and more spending!They have credit cards,all the gadgets with them,buying cars and even properties where many at times the maximim allowable deduction of their monthly salary maybe now is 60% is reached.This means they have only 40% balanced of their monthly salary to spend on food,schooling and all personal and family expenditures which is NOT Enough and maybe they then resort to borrowings with high interest (riba’) where alongs or banks are sourced into…this is the danger and HIGH DEBTS IN MALAYSIAN HOUSEHOLDS proof this problem exists!

What to do?

The best is education to all young generation to learn to live within their means and not live in excess or wastages of all kinds!If not all bad elements like corruption,cheating,poor moral values etc..will developed in these young people lives and then create a mess to them in living happily and harmoniously with their environment.Living in the city is already like a Rat Race or Dog eat Dog situation so why make matters worst?

Some people do have  a great discipline where money is concerned and some will go to the shopping malls maybe once a month or a week for any shopping needs or a family weekend or get together affair!However many of the city folks are basically in the shopping malls almost everyday where a cup of coffee or teh tarik can cost them RM 1.80 ~ RM10.00 per cup depending on the type of restaurants they enter!Living and eating at home is another major happening Malaysian must take note seriously and its safe,clean,cheap and fun also!Try it!

So,like Ramli before every 27th of the month like today is Money Day and like Ramli adviced be careful with your money and spend accordingly,wisely,smartly and saved for a secured future.Inshallah!

The recent story about the high salary of Singapore’s PM almost about SGD 2.2 Million annually (after the proposed cut of 36%) still qualify the Singapore PM as the highest salary Political Leader in the World much more than the US President and our own Malaysian PM!

To countries where their Corruption Index is among the Highest in the World,then these monthly salaries paid to Leaders of the World are just “peanuts” as what their greed have allowed them to rake MILLIONs or even Billions of USD in their secret accounts?Power here is certainly make Leaders Corrupt to the highest order and their people live in poverty while the Corrupt Leaders and their cronies rake in the money that was supposedly for the people and country development.

In Islam,let them later answer to Allah SWT  for all the greed and crimes and illicit money they “robbed” from their people.Hell is the only way for them to go and the punishment in Hell is just too horrible to describe yet felt by those hell occupants!

In this 21st Century when living in access can be the norm by many people especially in urban dwellings and Gen Y & Gen X population the urgent need to curb abuse of power is important and for the young children its best to teach them NOW the noble values of living rightly and eliminate greed in their life system all the time.However when we live in a “milieu” or environment where crooks or bad leaders are awed and respected for the ill gotten wealth they possess and “show of” then maybe its difficult to curb the fans or followers of such bad behaviours or role models!

In Singapore maybe the answer is to always “fined” whatever wrong doings the citizens do and punish severely all acts of corruptions found in govt or private sectors.In China the govt is also very serious about these corruption or crimes and anyone caught and proven by the courts for the mistakes made they can even be “put to death” or faced imprisonment to many long years.

Its easy to say for a Clean Govt but in reality is always difficult to act or punished wrong doers!Why?The main reason is the Leaders or Powers in the Govt or Companies are corrupt themselves and will protect their innocents at all times (even though they have raked in Millions or Billions of USD or RM or IDR whatever) during their tenure in office.

If we study the money lost annually in the world due to corruption and bad govt or what Ramli termed as “nonsense style of mgmt) the amount maybe in many hundred of Billions of USD and can even bankcrupt or criple a nation or company.The many stories of poor govts and companies are a testimony of such disgustful acts of corruption and nonsense mgmt.

What to do?

The people must be well educated in all knowledge about noble values,upholding them and punitive measures to those who commmit such crimes.We must respect people with high noble values,discipline and great leadership and mgmt.We must live without greed and abstained acts of excessiveness.The examples of lives of Great Persons like Prophet Muhammad pbuh,Mahatma Gandhi,Alims and Ulamaks plus others all teach us about their noble values and wanting to make great wealth on this earth is never their passion or mission at all.To them providing the best education,building noble values and disciplines and Belief in Allah (God) is their main reason for living and acting as a Leader of their People.Can our Leaders become like this Great People or still live in their luxury styles or excessiveness and bad moral or noble values.

The search for Great Talents especially to lead a company like a GLC or MNC or PLC is so critical and important because we want to ensure the company can survive and continue make profits and satisfy the shareholders.

MAS is now in search of a new CEO because the former CEO have been transfered to Khazanah Nasional Berhad to a more or less comfortable job and maybe a still good paying salary and perks (luckily not fired and become jobless if Leaders like Jack Welch is around managing!)

Great Talents for Malaysia is also been assigned to Malaysia’s Talent Corporation whose sole aim is to import Malaysians back home to work in Malaysian soil and help Malaysia achieve her ambition of a High Income Economy as spelt out in the ETP especially and also in our Vision 2020.Talent Corp need to bring in about 70,000 Professionals but surprisingly to fill the vacant post of one MAS CEO is still not accomplish that soon or in due speed!Why?

Malaysians who are now working overseas are paid in the currency of that particular country and like a doctor in UK maybe he or she is paid GBP 5,000 (equal about RM 25,000) and the same in USA is paid about USD 5,000 (equal about RM 15,000).So why come back to Malaysia when you are paid RM5,000 or maybe double RM10,000 when you can easily earn RM25,000 or maybe more overseas!

The other great factor of performance is maybe the background of the incumbent CEO?Most CEOs in Malaysia now have accounting background and as Accountants maybe they are best to know the ins and outs of the company financial health or status.This may help them to manage their companies with great care for bottomline results ie Profits not Losses!

However in leading a company or govt agency got a lot to do about LEADERSHIP.Do these CEOs have great leadership qualities and know how best to manage their people as well as their customers?

CEOs like Jack Welch for example knows what it needs to lead his TEAM to Excellence (No.1 or No.2 in the industry is OK with Jack but No.3 or others is Not Good)

Jack Welch have great business vision for GE and he also emphasise the building of Talents by his Executive College as well as being a Coach to some of his selected CEOs (kind of a Mentor-Mentee approach)

Konosuke Matsushita -The Founder of Panasonic also was a Great Business Leader who lead by example and build his business by his hard work,sweat and innovation.He dont wait for projects from Govt Officials nor play the game of ampu bude or worst still bribing and back stabbing.

Business Leaders of the Greatest Kind are those who lead their companies with their hearts and souls and treat their staff as their Team of Great Talents and will always lead by example and knows what’s is best to do and take actions to solve problems and make great profits.Most of them knows best how to utilise and unleash their people’s talents to infinite possibilities and capabilities.People are their dearest asset!

If we seriously study the status of Managing Corporate Malaysia,many of Malaysia’s CEOs have a 2-3 year contract and if their scorecard is excellent,the Board of Directors or basically the Owner of the Company will extend their contract for an equally 2-3 years more and so on.

So,these type of CEOs will eventually focus on bottom line results like Profits,Market Share,Market Capitalization,Branding and all the key Mgmt Ratios that BOD and Shareholders are happy with.The Voice of the Customers (VOC) and the Voice of the Employess (VOE) will be a subdued matter since all these VOC & VOE need development time to really “bear the fruits” of success and satisfaction.

Dr.Deming once again cautioned us about the subject of Mobility of Management in his explanation of the 5 Deadly Diseases effecting Management.

Dr.Deming stated that the Management of today do not know about the business they are in!They are in the company for so short a time like 1-3 years and they do not have good experience and knowledge about the company’s products,customers and suppliers what more all the nitty gritty or ABC of the business.Like in Malaysia many of the CEOs have accounting background and yes,they are good in “numbers” but not good in product knowledge or all about how the business is being run from “head to toe”!

Our CEOs will be happy with cost cutting measures,all the financial instruments that they can explore or introduce plus a whole lot of “short term actions” or short termed gained that they can make their company of group of companies realized!This after 10 years time will see the “nightmares” of those Top Mgmt actions and how much lost finally will be realized by the company in terms of market capitalization,profits and importance of the business to the country or world.Maybe these companies ceased in existence or bought over by some other companies!The thousands of workers and managers who lose their jobs will be devastating and just like “murdering” the whole family that depend on their fathers,mothers,sons and daughters for their living and meeting to daily needs.This is the serious effects of poor management and a social crime that is worst than a robber or killer of innocent people.So,what can be done to stop this deterioration?

Dr.Deming also stated in this aspect of Mobility of Management by the following 3 points:

1.this new management have no roots in the company

2.they also have no knowledge of the company

3.they also have no understanding of the company’s problems

 

Like as explained above,many of Malaysia’s CEOs or Top Mgmt are people brought in to “help with getting good profits and big fast ones” rather than ensuring continuity,sustainable good management,and build the people to build a great quality and successful company.

An example was given by Dr.Deming that in Japan a new manager was given the tasks to know the company well by delivering meat to customers premises for 7 years and by so doing with deligent and good customer service,this manager later became the Sales Manager and he prove to be perfect person for the business since he have good roots of the business and have lots of knowledge about the meat business and also understands all the problems experienced or will surfaced in the business.

Whats so different in Malaysia then?

Due to the short tenure of Malaysia’s CEOs managing businesses like Banking,Telecommunications,Infrastructures,Utilities,Auto Manufacturing,Food,Pharmeceuticals,Oil&Gas plus others they will have this 3 weakness that are No long roots in the Co,No ample knowledge of the company and not understanding the long time problems of the co!True of False?You tell me!

If we study the Malaysian businesses that thrived,sustainable,continual good stable profits and excellent customer satisfaction results are those Top Mgmt that have been there for more than 10 years or longer.Please see companies like Public Bank,Genting,AmBank,IOI,YTL,Selangor Pewter,Yeo Hiap Seng,Tan Chong Motors,Glomac,Bukit Kiara Properties and many more..

These companies have good management since they have constancy of purpose,quality is top priority,drive out fear (maybe),innovation and creativity,excellent teamwork,mobility of management at very minimum etc….

Both at the government and private sectors including all the GLCs,there need to be less mobility of management so that CEOs can make a plan and work that plan for making their company Great Companies!Each CEO have a place to grow their talents and make wealth and it is not good to be “jumping around” for new companies and let each CEO be “parked” at their respective locations and excel their perfomance to world class levels just like what Top Class CEOs have done in their respective business areas like IT,Banking,Food,Consumer Goods,Oil&Gas,Consulting,Fashion and others..you can read all these CEOs profiles in Fortune or Forbes magazines etc..

Maybe with this new thoughts (actually old thoughts from Dr.Deming announced way back in 1984 or earlier) and actions,Malaysia’s corporate and govt results will be better and more satisfying and meeting or surpassing all those indicators of the Vision 2020!Inshallah.

Ramli is still not a Millionaire although through the years he have sales turnover over a Million Ringgit or more but almost this 14 years in business Ramli still believe in doing business the “right way” with minimal “under table” deals,”feeding” the clients,”dont care less” attitude of supplies and orders plus many more business practices that are “not standard” or bad practices.Ramli prefer the age old ways of doing business ethically,with respect,honest,trust and most of all the good practices that are valued by civilised societies and communities.

Many business people nowadays in Malaysia believe gone are the days of being honest,trustworthy and sincere in our business dealings!Everyone in the hierarchy in the corporate sector or government “are on the take” as some tend to believe strongly and if you are not the “me too” type,you will not get any projects and become miserable all your life since no projects mean no business and no income and that means no food or salary for your staff and family.

The working life or city life is a “rat race” as many believe and if you are not fast,friendly,flexible and focus you will lose the race and end up being a poor performer or never hit your kpis’ and that mean more miseries..

Ramli realized all the ‘pasar malam” or “pasar tani” business people tend to be very happy lot and although their business model need them to work almost round the clock but they are happy because there are less politics,less hindrances of “undertable” dealings,less favouritism and better business environment everyday.Why?

Its because they deal directly with customers in an open marketplace,lots of competition but fair one,the best food gets sold faster,the more customer friendly gets more sales and customer loyalty and host of other fair and good business practices..

In other business environments like dealing with the GLCs,MNCs,PLCs,SMEs and Govt agencies or ministries,the threat or obstacles to create a sale or getting a project or purchase is “one kind of a story or journey” Maybe thats why we hear lots of cases of “rasuah” or bribes in all forms,cheating,poor leadership,undercutting of prices,overpricing and so many other bad practices and maybe thats why the Anti Corruption Agency or now with the new name (cant remember) and other law enforcement agencies are so busy with reports and solving all these CBTs and crooks!

Our unhealthy lifestyle of “big spenders” and living in excess is part of the main reason why people go for bribes and bad practices in their work especially if they hold some power to make decisions or approve budgets and requisition of purchases!

Ramli loves to do business like in the Friday marketplace at around the mosques where anyone can open up his/her stall (some places you must reserve ur place and pay the day’s rental)and you do business with openness,no worry of bribes or corrupt officials!

However,with greed in place,some of these areas even in the marketplace like the mosques or shopping zones have succumbed to “politics” and only the well connected person get the stalls or business opportunities!Why this is happening?

For a Muslim who understand the religion very well then he/she realized all “rezeki” is pre determined by Allah SWT and we just pray and pray that Allah SWT will protect us and blessed us all the time.Wealth on earth is temporary but happiness at the Hereafter is more important,permanent and more blissful.A good muslim also do not depend on the high officials for his income or wealth building but it is more from Allah SWT and thats matters.So no need to “ampu bode” or “pay homage” to these Top Officials or Bosses or Super Bosses because they are just like YOU and they too depend on Allah SWT (God Almighty) for their great future and if Allah SWT wants to “pull” or “sealed” their fate with hardships or miseries,HE can do that “at once” -Qun Faya Qun…

So,Ramli’s Business Journey goes on as it has been many years before and all the mistakes and errors that Ramli have made in his business or decisions will need to be resolved and make sure it is not repeated and Inshallah,with Allah SWT Blessings and Mercy,Ramli’s business will grow and grow to help please many stakeholders that is Ramli,his Family,his Relatives,his Friends and all that matters.

All Bad Business Practices that may have made some people so rich and wealthy will not be Ramli’s way of life BUT Ramli will always practice the Good Ways and Halal Ways that Allah SWT allows and blessed us.Thats Better.Inshallah.
