Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTrights in the United States have evolved over time and vary greatly on a state-by-state basis.

Sexual activity between consenting adults and adolescents of a close age of the same sex has been legal nationwide since 2003, pursuant to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. TexasAge of consent in each state varies from age 16 to 18; some states maintain different ages of consent for males/females or same-sex/opposite-sex relations.

LGBT rights related laws including family, marriage, and anti-discrimination laws vary by state. Thirteen states plus Washington, D.C. currently offer marriage to same-sex couples; these marriages are recognized by the federal government, but not by most other states. Additionally, some states offer civil unions or other types of recognition which offer some of the legal benefits and protections of marriage.

Twenty-one states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, and seventeen states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico outlaw discrimination based on gender identity or expression.[1] Hate crimes based on sexual orientation orgender identity are also punishable by federal law under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. In 2011 and 2012, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that job discrimination against Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders classified as a form of sex discrimination and thus violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.[2]

Adoption policies in regard to gay and lesbian parents also vary greatly from state to state. Some allow adoption by same-sex couples, while others ban all unmarried couples from adoption.

Civil rights for LGBT people in the United States are advocated by a variety of organizations at all levels and concentrations of political and legal life, including the Human Rights Campaign,[3] Lambda LegalGay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

There need a STOP to all these nonsenses and begin living the rightful human ways sooner the better. The wraths or anger from Allah SWT (God Almighty) is just too heavy or what humans can ever bear on earth what more in the Hereafter…

Furlough

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about a temporary layoff legal in the United States. For other uses, see Furlough (disambiguation).

In the United States, a furlough (/ˈfɜrl/; from Dutch: “verlof”) is a temporary unpaid leave of some employees due to special needs of a company, which may be due to economic conditions at the specific employer or in the economy as a whole. These involuntary furloughs may be short or long term, and many of those affected may seek other temporary employment during that time.

Federal government[edit]

In the United States, involuntary furloughs concerning federal government employees may be of a sudden and immediate nature. Such was the case in February 2010, when a single Senateobjection prevented emergency funding measures from being implemented. As a result, 2000 federal workers for the Department of Transportation were immediately furloughed as of March 1, 2010.[1] The longest such shutdown was December 16, 1995, to January 6, 1996, which affected all non-essential employees, shutting down many services including National Institutes of Health, visa and passport processing, parks, and many others. This happened again on October 1, 2013.[2]

The United States Congress failed to pass a re-authorization of funding for the Federal Aviation Administration, and as a result, furloughed about 4,000 workers at midnight on July 22, 2011.

Six traits of Champion Entrepreneurs

Naomi Simson

November 29, 2012

National Winners Ernst & Young Entrepeneur of the Year 2011 (Matt Barrie fellow blogger)

Last year I was a national winner of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year program – and tonight is the 2102 event where the crown gets passed to the next chosen one. One of the best things about the program is that you get to hang out with some amazing people who have created phenomenal businesses. And the lessons learned are useful even if you are not in business.

Jack Cowin one of the judges shared “An entrepreneur needs to be a cross between a microbiologist and an astronomer.” He believes that true entrepreneurs are special in that they can be both detailed and visionary.

As a judge Jack had attended the EY Global Entrepreneur event in Monte Carlo. It was a delight to have him in the room sharing his insights.

Jack believes true entrepreneurs are special in that they can be both detailed and visionary, and offers the following Six Traits of Champion Entrepreneurs:

  1. Entrepreneurs have a fundamental curiosity – they want to explore things.
My favorite word is ‘Why?’ I always have books piled next to my bed, blogs to read, conferences to attend. I like to know everthing.
  2. Entrepreneurs are persistent beyond reason.
Hmm, yes, I have been accused of stubbornness. Once when I told the tale of waiting the 2 months and 4 days for redballoon.com.au first order to come in, someone asked me why I didn’t give up? This persistence was what motivated me to keep going even though I wasn’t seeing immediate results, even when my then husband was telling me how much money I was losing. Most importantly, I knew my WHY and it never entered my head that I’d fail on a purpose I was committed to and passionate about.
  3. Entrepreneurs search for better ways to do things – they agitate for change.
As I like to say, are you simply building a new mouse-trap, or changing the game of rodent management forever? When I started RedBalloon there was nothing else like it in Australia and New Zealand; a totally new way of aggregating a new range of experience gifts. The traditional gift retailers probably still don’t view us as competition – we played outside the field.
  4. Entrepreneurs are endlessly positive in every part of their live
A woman once asked me if she could have whatever ‘I was on’. I admit, I can be overwhelmingly positive. I am blessed with a tendency to look for the best in things and wear rose-coloured specs. I believe every problem is an opportunity.
  5. Entrepreneurs are focused and able to run lean and mean
I believe focus and persistence are two-sides of the same coin. When you find your purpose, the ‘Why’ you are in business, the easier it is to maintain your focus. Running lean and mean offers the ability to be nimble – to be a little dog with a big dog attitude.
  6. Entrepreneurs have exemplary people skills – they understand leverage and that it cannot be done alone.
I’ve always said RedBalloon has been about the team of people who have built it into the business it is today. My purpose as an entrepreneurial leader is to focus on WHY we do what we do and mentor people to share that.

What other lessons have you learned from champions?

What is the Fiscal Cliff?

By Thomas Kenny, About.com Guide

The Fiscal Cliff Explained

“Fiscal cliff” is the popular shorthand term used to describe the conundrum that the U.S. government will face at the end of 2012, when the terms of the Budget Control Act of 2011 are scheduled to go into effect.

Among the laws set to change at midnight on December 31, 2012, are the end of last year’s temporary payroll tax cuts (resulting in a 2% tax increase for workers), the end of certain tax breaks for businesses, shifts in the alternative minimum tax that would take a larger bite, the end of the tax cuts from 2001-2003, and the beginning of taxes related to President Obama’s health care law. At the same time, the spending cuts agreed upon as part of the debt ceiling deal of 2011 will begin to go into effect. According to Barron’s, over 1,000 government programs – including the defense budget and Medicare are in line for “deep, automatic cuts.”

In dealing with the fiscal cliff, U.S. lawmakers have a choice among three options, none of which are particularly attractive:

  • They can let the current policy scheduled for the beginning of 2013 – which features a number of tax increases and spending cuts that are expected to weigh heavily on growth and possibly drive the economy back into a recession – go into effect. The plus side: the deficit, as a percentage of GDP, would be cut in half.
  • They can cancel some or all of the scheduled tax increases and spending cuts, which would add to the deficit and increase the odds that the United States could face a crisis similar to that which is occurring in Europe. The flip side of this, of course, is that the United States’ debt will continue to grow.
  • They could take a middle course, opting for an approach that would address the budget issues to a limited extent, but that would have a more modest impact on growth.

Can a Compromise be Reached?

The oncoming fiscal cliff is a concern for investors since the highly partisan nature of the current political environment could make a compromise difficult to reach. This problem isn’t new, after all: lawmakers have had three years to address this issue, but Congress – mired in political gridlock – has largely put off the search for a solution rather than seeking to solve the problem directly. Republicans want to cut spending and avoid raising taxes, while Democrats are looking for a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. Although both parties want to avoid the fiscal cliff, compromise is seen as being difficult to achieve – particularly in anelection year. The most likely result, in any event, is that the problem will linger at least until after the election, and there’s a strong possibility that Congress won’t act until the eleventh hour. Another potential obstacle is that the next Congress won’t be sworn in until January 3.

The most likely result is another set of stop-gap measures that would delay a more permanent policy change until 2013 or later. The election will almost certainly have an impact on the direction of future policy, particularly if one party earns a decisive victory. Nevertheless, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that if Congress takes the middle ground – extending the Bush-era tax cuts but cancelling the automatic spending cuts – the result, in the short term, would be modest growth but no major economic hit.

Possible Effects of the Fiscal Cliff

If the current laws slated for 2013 go into effect, the impact on the economy could be dramatic. While the combination of higher taxes and spending cuts would reduce the deficit by an estimated $560 billion, the CBO estimates that the policies set to go into effect would cut gross domestic product (GDP) by four percentage points in 2013, sending the economy into a recession (i.e., negative growth). At the same time, it predicts unemployment would rise by almost a full percentage point, with a loss of about two million jobs. A Wall St. Journal article from May 16, 2012 estimates the following impact in dollar terms: “In all, according to an analysis by J.P. Morgan economist Michael Feroli, $280 billion would be pulled out of the economy by the sunsetting of the Bush tax cuts; $125 million from the expiration of the Obama payroll-tax holiday; $40 million from the expiration of emergency unemployment benefits; and $98 billion from Budget Control Act spending cuts. In all, the tax increases and spending cuts make up about 3.5% of GDP, with the Bush tax cuts making up about half of that, according to the J.P. Morgan report.” Amid an already-fragile recovery and elevated unemployment, the economy is not in a position to avoid this type of shock.

The cost of indecision is likely to have an effect on the economy before 2013 even begins. The CBO anticipates that a lack of resolution will cause households and businesses to begin changing their spending in anticipation of the changes, possible reducing GDP by a full half-percent in the second half of 2012.

Having said this, it’s important to keep in mind that while the term “cliff” indicates an immediate disaster at the beginning of 2013, the impact of the changes – while destructive over a full year – will be gradual at first. What’s more, Congress can act to change laws retroactively after the deadline. As a result, the fiscal cliff won’t necessarily be an impediment to growth even if Congress doesn’t address the issue until after 2013 has already begun.

Read this article about the Growth of Islam in USA.

The Fastest Growing Religion in America Is…

Do you know what the fastest growing religion in America is?  It isn’t Christianity.  According to the latest U.S. Religion Census that was just released on May 1, 2012, the fastest growing religion in America is Islam.  The data for the census was compiled by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, and the results were released by the Association of Religion Data Archives.  From the year 2000 to the year 2010, the census found that the number of Muslims living inside the United States increased from 1 million to 2.6 million – a stunning increase of 66.7 percent.  That is an astounding rate of growth.  Meanwhile, most Christian denominations had rates of growth that were far below the overall rate of population growth in the United States, and some Christian denominations actually lost members.  Sadly, when Barack Obama once said that “we are no longer a Christian nation” he wasn’t too far off the mark.  Christianity is rapidly losing influence and other religions such as Islam are rapidly gaining members and building new places of worship.  As other major religions such as Islam continue to grow in the United States, it is inevitable that this will reshape America in many different ways in the years ahead.

So what about other religious groups?

How did they fare according to the U.S. Religion Census?

Well, the following are some of the growth rates for major religious organizations from the year 2000 to the year 2010….

Mormons: +45.5%

Evangelical Protestants: +1.7% (far behind the overall rate of population growth)

Catholics: -5.0%

Mainline Protestants: -12.8% (an astounding decline)

But it was Islam that experienced the most explosive growth.

According to Ihsan Bagby, a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Kentucky, there were about 1,200 mosques in America back in the year 2000.

According to this new census, there are now 2,106.

All over the United States we are seeing “mega-mosques” being constructed, and in many cases the funding is coming from overseas.

And these mega-mosques are not going unused.  In some areas of the country, Islamic communities are experiencing absolutely explosive growth.

The following example comes from a recent USA Today article….

Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, saw growth explode by a whopping 473 percent in and around Orlando’s Orange County, according to the RCMS study, and he thinks the growth is actually double the 10,000 new Muslims reported by the study.

He said Muslim growth has been fueled by a wave of post-9/11 converts, American-born children of immigrants having kids of their own, and jobs in the booming medical industry. In central Florida, he said, Muslims are just following everyone else in search of “better weather, cheaper prices, cheaper homes.”

A lot of this growth is being fueled by immigration.  A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center back in 2007 discovered that 39 percent of all adult Muslims living in America were immigrants that had arrived in the United States since 1990.

This rapid influx of Muslims is reshaping communities all over America.  For example, Muslim students now account for approximately 10 percent of the total number of students in the New York City School District.

And all over the country many school districts are now changing their school calendars to observe Islamic holidays.

In fact, in Dearborn, Michigan football practices are actually scheduled around Ramadan.  The following is from aFox News article….

In Dearborn, Mich., where schools are closed on both the day before and the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the predominantly-Muslim football team has switched its two-a-day summer practice schedule to 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. during Ramadan, so that Muslim players — who fast while the sun is up – won’t be forced to practice in the heat without drinking water.

The move received little backlash in Dearborn, because most of the football players are Muslims.

Dearborn is located just outside of Detroit, and it contains one of the densest Arab communities outside of the Middle East.  Each day, the local mosque’s call to prayer can be clearly heard all over the city.  Dearborn is a clear example of why we can no longer call America a “Christian nation”.

But Islam is not the only non-Christian religion that is growing rapidly in America.

The latest U.S. Religion Census found that non-Christian groups grew by 32 percent overall from the year 2000 to the year 2010.

Meanwhile, as I have written about previously, the decline of Christianity in America is accelerating.

Back in 1990, one survey found that 86 percent of all Americans identified themselves as “Christian” of one sort or another.

By 2008, only 76 percent of all Americans identified themselves as “Christian” of one sort or another.

Meanwhile, atheism and the “not religious” are experiencing huge gains in numbers.  For example, the U.S. Census Bureau says that the number of Americans with “no religion” more than doubled between 1990 and 2008.

Even many of those that still apply the label of “Christian” to themselves are not very committed.  The latest U.S. Religion Census found that approximately 150 million Americans are not actively engaged with any religious community at all.  That is nearly half of the population.

So America is changing.

It is becoming less religious and it is becoming less Christian.

What is your opinion about all of this?

Please feel free to post a comment with your thoughts below…

All the news we hear and read in magazines, newspapers,TV shows and documentaries are interestingly about Great CEOs or Leaders are more about what they earned a month,a year and in their career! Why?

We “poor people” are awed as to their high paying salaries in the Millions of USD,Ringgit or SGD every month they worked.Prof Drucker the Great Manageement Guru once cautioned us to only pay about 20 times more salary between the lowest officer than the CEO (No.1) and anything more than that will be bad or create great tensions in the company due to the exorbitant salary differences.

For example Ramli read the news about our own Malaysian Bank CEO who is paid annually a salary of almost RM 5 Million a year while the maybe lowest executive in the bank may earned (eg.RM 2,500 x 16 months with 4 mths bonus) RM 40,000 annually. So  based on this example the CEO earned almost 125 times more than the normal executive in the bank? Its so much more than the 20 times salary difference as proposed by Prof.Drucker?

In USA the salary of CEOs are mind boggling where  the CEO of Apple Inc received about USD378 Million (RM 1.16 Billion) in his 2011 salary and perks. Is it fair or a good practice for a rich company like Apple Inc to do?Then what must be a fair compensation?

Real Great CEOs must do more for their people and that includes making their people better, richer and happier after he gets his people to work harder, smarter, more loyal and great passion for the company’s prosperity and customer satisfaction.

Fire in the CEO’s eyes must be more to all this responsibilities and roles of CEO and his ability to make things work and produce great results are his mission all the time!

CEOs who only wants big fat salary must be ignored and not worthy as Company Champion or Head Honcho!YOU only relax and enjoy your rewards after your hard work and smart thinking to raise the standard of your people, company and stakeholders satisfaction.Maybe thats a better way to make living better and improve the people happiness and lives. What say you?

Being No.1 person in a company like a CEO’s post is good at times and bad (no challenging is a better word) at times also! Why?

A CEO is a person who leads and who set the pace, the culture and actions of the company! If the business is good, products selling well and customers are delighted then its all about managing success and more growth…

However if the company business is slow, poor sales and lots of customer complaints then the CEO’s job need lots of hard work, smart thinking and making all the right moves for Business Transformation,Survival and Sustainability!

Its when there are lots of challenges that the CEO’s true colors can be seen and realized! Can the CEO help transform the organisation to a World Class co or being in the Fortune 500 Top Cos list?

Malaysian CEOs are plenty and especially those listed at the Bursa Malaysia all have their important roles to improve stock performance, market capitalisation and company’s brand and many more….

American or Japanese CEOs too have that important responsibilities but maybe more since their companies are already in the Fortune 500 listing.

Their business are global in nature and they have to satisfy global customers all the time. They need to do their management by flying around and also make innovation a strong driver for their co’s existence and survival!

Malaysian CEOs’ too need this kind of work and they too jet set all over the world finding new ideas for the business. Are they successful?

Based on their sales turnover and profits generated maybe they are just normal CEOs who did not qualify their company to become a Fortune 500 listed company just in the Malaysian Business Top 100 companies!

So just Juara Kampung not yet Juara Dunia as we always say or compare our football teams to those at EPL,La Liga or other world class champonships. To be Juara Dunia you need many skills, expertise, innovative products and global marketing and sales etc…

Maybe companies like Maybank,CIMB,Sime Darby,AirAsia have aspirations to be Juara ASEAN or ASIA and to move up to be Juara Dunia or World Ranking companies in terms of market capitalisation, sales turnover and EBITDA performance then they are still very far as compared to Japanese or Chinese and even Singaporean companies.

So what are then Malaysian CEOs performance so far and are they doing their very best to really perform and achieve their mission rather than Cakap Cakap or Lagak Lagak like they are World CEOs’ Quality and Performers and worst still when they fooled the people or stakeholders with their Business Plans and over promise (just mere cheap talk not real results)Maybe thats the challenge for Malaysian CEOs?
