Independence Day (United States)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Fourth of July” redirects here. For the date, see July 4. For other uses, see 4th of July (disambiguation).

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of theDeclaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.[1][2][3]

Background

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia.[4][5]After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.[6]

Adams’s prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.[7]

Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.[8][9][10][11][12]

In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve asPresidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, the Fifth President of the United States, died on July 41831Calvin Coolidge, the Thirtieth President, was born on July 4,1872, and thus was the only President to be born on Independence Day.

An 1825 invitation to an Independence Day celebration

  • In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.[13]
  • In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Oceanambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in ParisFrance.[14]
  • In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.[14]
  • In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.[14]
  • In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled “The Psalm of Joy”.
  • In 1791 the first recorded use of the name “Independence Day” occurred.
  • In 1820 the first Fourth of July celebration was held in Eastport, Maine which remains the largest in the state.[15]
  • In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[16]
  • In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.[17]

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner“, “God Bless America“, “America the Beautiful“, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee“, “This Land Is Your Land“, “Stars and Stripes Forever“, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.

Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.[19]

In 2009, New York City had the largest fireworks display in the country, with over 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploded.[18] Other major displays are in Chicago on Lake Michigan; in San Diegoover Mission Bay; in Boston on the Charles River; in St. Louis on the Mississippi River; in San Francisco over the San Francisco Bay; and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C..

During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom FestivalDetroit, Michigan hosts one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate Independence Day in conjunction with Windsor, Ontario‘s celebration of Canada Day.

While the official observance always falls on July 4th, participation levels may vary according to which day of the week the 4th falls on. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region.

The first week of July is typically one of the busiest American travel periods of the year, as many people utilize the holiday for extended vacation trips.[20]

Unique or historical celebrations

Originally entitled Yankee Doodle, this is one of several versions of a scene painted by A. M. Willard that came to be known asThe Spirit of ’76. Often imitated or parodied, it is a familiar symbol of American patriotism

Ramli was just reading the book titled ” Tausug & The Sulu Sultante” written by Asreemoro in 2008.

Reading the book really make you feel how our history books or reports have been distorting the real truth about all on the Tausug and the Sulu Sultanate!

There are so many interesting historical facts that maybe many of us do not know because we may not see these stories as important to us since we have so many things on our mind and also all the important things that we must do inorder to get our salaries, our profits from our businesses or also in feeding our family day to day! So,many important facts of history just passed us by and we do not know that these stories have happened what more have been distorted or written with wrong facts and full of errors either with bad intentions or to not tell the truth to future generations just as like what we do now to “sweep under the carpet” all facts that we want to hide from our bosses or higher authorities like governments.

In this book written by Asreemore, the stories about The Treasury Assets of the Sulu Sultanate (on Chapter 14) is really mind bogling! Why?

If all these facts and stories written by Asreemoro is the TRUTH then as the author wrote “in about 1935,the wealth of Sultan Jamalul-Kiram-II (which in reality was the state treasury assets, but possibly mixed with the private owning of the Sultan) amounting to 617,000 metric tons of gold bars were transported to Manila through his trustees,Rev.Father Antonio Diaz @Col.Severino Garcia Sta Romana and Prince Julian Mac Leod Tallano. With the death of the Dignitary in the following year (1936),the fate of these assets fell directly into the hands of these two trustees.

In the book also mentioned that “it is obvious from the foregoing discussion that there is a very compelling reason for us to believe that the assets belonging to President Marcos,Rev.Father Antonio Diaz Sta Romana and the Tagean -Tallano families are in reality ill gotten gains derived from the treasury assets of the Sulu Sultanate .Out of the total sum,it is believed that 400,000 metric tons of bullions still remain today in the Bangko Ang Philippines (Manila) and the remaining 217,500 metric tons are deposited in various banks all over the world.

Based on the estimate done by a researcher of ill-gotten wealth by the name of Mike Kay,the assets belonging to the Sulu Sultanate is now worth in the region of USD$ 400,000 DUODECILLION! (Ramli also do not really know whats that worth really…anyone can make clear what that amount really means?) OK,Ramli got the answer already..see below

noun

1.

a cardinal number represented in the U.S. by 1 followed by 39zeros, and in Great Britain by1 followed by 72 zeros.

Whatever is the correct value of the Sulu assets, one fact remains-if the claim by the Sulu Sultanate actually falls through, the world may witness the biggest single pay out of debt in the world. With that payment, the Sulu Sultanate may very well emerge as the wealthiest Sultanate in the World.

As far as the family of the “Second Heir Apparent” is concerned, they are currently in the process of pursuing with this claim.Petitions to the United Nations and the International Court of Justice are steps that the family contemplates in taking in the not too distant a future.

In the meantime, the family is concentrating its efforts on garnering more data, pertinent documents, old records relating to the Sultanate as well as financial assistance to beef up its case on the existence of the treasury assets of the Sulu Sultanate.

Please do read this interesting book so that like Ramli and especially the Family of the Sulu Sultanate will want to seek the TRUTH and JUSTICE ACHIEVED and don’t allow fallacies, bad people and worst still allow wrong doers to escape or “scot free” and enjoying the wealth of others for their own selfish needs and greeds.

This must be the “standard” or norm of Today’s Generation where with Great Knowledge,We Seek the Real Truth no matter how history have hidden them and no matter how smart those “crooks” have tried to “swipe under the carpets” or made to know by the world at large of the wrong facts and historical notes!

LET’S HOPE THE TRUTH WILL PREVAILED AND ALL OF GOOD CITIZENS WILL BENEFIT FROM THE GOOD THAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME LIKE THIS STORY ON THE SULU SULTANATE.INSHALLAH.

THE SULU SULTANATE ASSETS.
Datu Lajamura – May 23rd, 2006
THE SULU SULTANATE ASSETS: Estimated within USD$ 1.575 – 2.0 TRILLION +++, from 5 SOURCES (Infos recovered in 2006).

1. Yamashita Treasure: Under Sultan Johan E.Kandau Account (210,000 Mertic Tons of Gold Bullion to be split with 13 countries). The real Sultan of Sulu will entitle to get USD$100 Billion for the whole Philippines & USD$100 Billion more for Brunei country. (*Someone said that even Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei could not entitle to get this monies of USD$100 Billions for Brunei country).

2.The Sultan of Sulu Assets in the Philippines: 400,000 Metric Tons were kept in Philippines Central Bank (Bangko Ang Philipinas) since 1949. If it will be claim by the real Sultan of Sulu, the Philippines should pay it about USD$925 Billion +++ to the real Sultan of Sulu.

3. The 8,000 Metric Tons of golds under the Trustee in Luxembourg, with estimated worthy = USD$ 50 Billion.

4. The Assets of the Sulu Sultanate in 300 Banks around the world under the name of “REV. GARCIA STA ROMANA” at about 62,500 Metric Tons golds with worth of about USD$360 Billion. AND,

5. The 6,000 Metric Tons of Gold Bullion which was deposited by the late President Soekarno under the name of “Sultan Bholkiah Toea” (Sultan Bolkiah Tua). As have connected blood with Sultan Bolkiah Tua, the real Sultan of Sulu will can claim from the assets at about USD$40 Billion.

With all these assets, in future “The real Sultan of Sulu” will become “The Most Richest-Man in the world”.

Since the “First Heir-Apparent” (Sultan Azimuddin @ Alimuddin-I @ Fernando-I ibni Sultan Badaruddin-I) was “Baptisted” to be a “Christian’s” at around 1748/50, he and his heirs or his successors (The Kiram & Shakiraullah Families -for nowdays time) RIGHT over the Sulu Sultanate “Assets, Properties & Territories” were “Abolished”.

Now, the assets just entitled to be claims by “The Sulu Sultanate Second heir-apparent” (The Maharajah Adinda Families -the heirs & Successor of the Sultan Bantilan Muizzuddin ibni Sultan Badaruddin-I). And THE REAL SULTAN OF SULU (for nowdays time) must come from this families.

Anyway, because lack of financial, this families couldnot proceed their claims to the high level.

So, for those who interested in these matters & willing to be the “Sponsorships” to this families to succeed their claims over their ancestor’s Multibillion assets, are welcome!

More News On Sulu Sultanate:

Sulu Sultan ready to drop Sabah claim

Self-styled Sulu sultanate’s Prime Minister has declared that a Malaysian citizen residing in Sabah will be installed as the new sultan soon.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sulu Sultanate hopes to reach an amicable solution with the Malaysian government to drop the claim on Sabah once its new sultan, belived to be a Malaysian citizen, is installed.

Datu Albi Ahmad Julkarnain, the self-styled “prime minister of the interim government of the Sulu sultanate” made the announcement at a specially arranged press conference yesterday.

Adopting a “royal” manner at the press conference, he intoned: “I am delighted to solemnly announce here that after the investiture of the new sultan, which date shall be announced at a not-too-distant future, serious consideration to dropping the claim to Sabah would be deliberated in the best interest of Islam brotherhood, and long-term mutual bilateral relations between the Sulu sultanate and Malaysia.”

He said this was a friendly gesture by the sultanate “to reciprocate the Malaysian government’s kind treatment of its people who fled the war-torn Sulu province to Sabah back in the 1970s, to escape persecution by the Philippine government”.

According to him, the sultanate’s records showed that there are more than 20,000 citizens of the Sulu sultanate commonly known as the Tausug people scattered all over Malaysia and in Sabah in particular.

Albi, 73, also shocked many of those present at the occasion, including the Special Branch officers, when he disclosed that the soon-to-be-installed sultan of Sulu is a Malaysian citizen currently living in Sabah.

He, however, declined to name the person, citing safety reasons.

He claimed that the new sultan is a direct descendant of Paduka Mahasari Maulana Al-Marhum Sultan Shariful-Hashim and that upon his enthronement he will be known as Paduka Mahasari Maulana Sultan Shariful-Hashim II.

The investiture ceremony is expected to take place in Jolo, the capital of Sulu Province in the Philippines in the next couple of months.

“With this new sultan of Sulu, I can guarantee that the Sulu sultanate will not touch Sabah. We are not going to authorise the Philippine government to claim Sabah as they have no rights whatsoever over Sabah,” he assured.

Proof of lineageAlbi said the sultanate of Sulu vehemently denounced all those self-proclaimed sultans of Sulu including those installed by the Philippine government and foreign powers in the past.Among them he said was a Chinese citizen named Allen Neoh Weng Wah who proclaimed himself “King of Borneo, Sulu and Mindanao” in an “investiture” ceremony conducted in Hong Kong, last year. The video footage of the ceremony was even uploaded onto YouTube.“Unlike the soon-to-be-enthroned sultan Shariful-Hashim II, all these so-called sultans of Sulu have no legitimacy or mandate from the Tausug people,” he stressed. He especially rubbished those who claimed to have been installed as the Sulu sultan by the Philippine government.“How can the head of a sovereign state be installed by another country? Some of them are not even citizens of Sulu. Can I, as a Tausug proclaim myself as sultan of America?” he asked. He further noted that the soon-to-be-enthroned sultan has all the relevant historical and legal documents to prove that he is indeed the direct descendant of Paduka Mahasari Maulana Al-Marhum Sultan Shariful-Hashim, the founder and the first Sultan of Sulu Sultanate.“On behalf of the Sulu sultanate, I am also delighted to announce that the barely known 1799 platinum box containing ancient royal documents and paraphernalia of the past sultans which were transferred out of the palace in 1862 during the time of Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Fadzlun
Pulalun that had been properly and secretly hidden, will be uncovered in due course.“The key of the said box under code 1799 is in the possession of the incoming sultan. We appeal to all nations which are trustee custodians of these historical assets to be ready to deal with the government of the sultanate,” he said.He said that the immense wealth and assets of the Sulu sultanate was the rationale behind the phenomenon of people all over the world clamouring to proclaim themselves as the sultan of Sulu sultanate.
The Sulu sultanate’s records show that there are some 24 “sultans of Sulu” in the Sulu Archipelago, while the US State Department’s record indicated that there are some 123 “sultans of Sulu” scattered around the world, he said.

American confidence falls even as corporate profits rise

NEW YORK: Americans’ confidence in the economy faded further in July, according to a monthly survey released Tuesday, amid job worries and skimpy wage growth.

That’s at odds with Wall Street’s recent rally fueled by upbeat earnings reports from big businesses such as chemical maker DuPont Co. and equipment maker Caterpillar Inc.

That’s because the pumped-up profits are being fueled by cost cuts like layoffs and overseas sales. In fact, big companies have shown few signs they’re ready to hire.

The Consumer Confidence Index came in at 50.4 in July, a steeper-than-expected decline from the revised 54.3 in June, according to a survey the Conference Board. The decline follows last month’s decline of nearly 10 points, from 62.7 in May, and is the lowest point since February. It takes a reading of 90 to indicate a healthy economy — a level not seen since the recession began in December 2007.

“Consumers have a much different view of the economy than the stock market does, and their views matter more to the economy,” said Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo. The index “tells me the economy is heading for slower growth in the second half. We have low expectations for back-to-school.”

Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors, agreed, noting that the fatter profits have shown that companies have been able to squeeze out higher productivity from workers, but that also means that “households are not benefiting.”

The profit picture is “good news for Wall Street, but not good for workers,” he added.

The survey was taken July 1-21, beginning just before the Standard & Poor’s 500 index hit a nine-month low of 1,022.58 on July 2. It had risen 4.5 percent by July 21 and has since climbed an additional 4 percent as upbeat earnings reports from key manufacturers have made investors more convinced that the economic recovery isn’t stalling as much as they had originally thought.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 12 points Tuesday, although broader stock measures slipped, after three days of big gains, as investors digested the confidence data as well as a slowdown in regional manufacturing reported by the Richmond Federal Reserve. Stocks rose moderately at the open because of strong earnings from chemical maker DuPont Co. and European banks UBS and Deutsche Bank.

DuPont, which has announced thousands of job cuts over the past year, reported that second-quarter income nearly tripled, as revenue surged in most of its businesses. The results were led by revenue gains in the Asia Pacific region. DuPont didn’t announce any hiring plans.

A rapid, sustainable recovery can’t happen without the American consumer. And the second straight month of declining confidence following three months of increases is worrisome, economists say.

Economists watch confidence closely because consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity and is critical to a strong rebound.

Both components of the index declined. They measure how people feel about the economy now, and their expectations for the next six months.

The index — which measures how Americans feel about business conditions, the job and the next six months market— had been recovering fitfully since hitting an all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009. The index typically falls before the economy slows down, and on the way out of a recession, the expectations component, which accounts for 60 percent of index, rises sharply, said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center.

“It’s all about jobs. That’s still the primary source of income,” Franco said. “Until we see the pace of job growth pick up and consumers are confident that this is sustainable, we are not likely to see a significant pickup in confidence.”

The Conference Board survey, based on a random survey mailed to 5,000 households, showed that consumers’ assessment of the job market was more negative than the month before. Those claiming that jobs are “hard to get” increased to 45.8 from 43.5 percent, while those saying jobs are “plentiful” remained unchanged at 4.3 percent.

Economists say the index’s expectations component tends to track stock market movements, but Vitner noted that the market’s big plunge in May has made such an imprint on consumers that the recent rebound hasn’t registered.

Retailers had a surprisingly solid start to the year, but business has been slowing since April. With unemployment stuck near 10 percent, Americans are expected to remain skittish through the back-to-school and Christmas season.

Concerns are also rising about the housing market. While the S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index released Tuesday showed a 1.3 percent rise in May from April, the home buyer’s tax credit, which expired April 30, helped pull more buyers into the market. In fact, the report warned that the recent gains in home prices are not likely to last. – AP
